A brief introduction to mosquito nets
A mosquito net usually refers to a net that you sleep under at night. They are intended to stop you from being bitten by insects when you are sleeping. Although they are often referred to as mosquito nets they are effective against all flying insects.
They are made from a mesh type fabric that has holes too small to allow insects to pass through but large enough for air to flow through. The size of these holes and are usually referred to by the number of them in a square inch of the fabric. The higher this number, the smaller the holes are and therefore the more effective they are against very small insects. Most mosquito nets tend to have from 196 to 400 holes per square inch.
There are several different types of mosquito net currently available, most require them to be suspended above your sleeping area to form an enclosed protective area around you but some are completely self supporting and only need to be removed from their bags to be available for immediate use. Some are treated with an insecticide to kill the insect on contact but not all.
Although mosquito nets are mainly used in tropical areas they can also be of use in areas with large biting midge populations. In many tropical areas they are an essential defence against malaria and dengue fever, but are equally beneficial in avoiding the painful itchy lumps caused by insect bites generally.
